Broadening of Spectral Lines Due to Dynamic Multiple Scattering and the Tully-fisher Relation
نویسندگان
چکیده
The frequency shift of spectral lines is most often explained by the Doppler Effect in terms of relative motion, whereas theDoppler broadening of a particular line mainly depends on the absolute temperature. The Wolf effect on the other hand deals with the correlation induced spectral change and explains both the broadening and shift of the spectral lines. In this framework a relation between the width of the spectral line is related to the redshift z for the line and hence with the distance. For smaller values of z a relation similar to the Tully-Fisher relation can be obtained and for larger values of z a more general relation can be constructed. The derivation of this kind of relation based on dynamic multiple scattering theory may play a significant role in explaining the overall spectra of quasi stellar objects. We emphasize that this mechanism is not applicable for nearby galaxies, z ≤ 1.

The faint end of the Tully - Fisher relation
We have studied the relation between HI linewidth and optical luminosity in two samples of dwarf galaxies, with special attention to the accuracy of the inclination correction. The first sample consists of rotationally supported galaxies, and has DDO 154 as a prototype. They have HI linewidths significantly larger than predicted by an extrapolation of the Tully-Fisher relation. The deviation fr...

The shifting of spectral lines due to induced correlation effect, discovered first by Wolf for the single scattering case which mimics the Doppler mechanism has been extended and developed further by the present authors to study the behavior of spectral lines in the case of multiple scattering and observed shifting, as well as broadening of the spectrum. We have explored Dynamic Multiple Scatte...
متن کاملEffect of multiple scattering on broadening and the frequency shift of spectral lines
The effect of multiple scattering on the broadening and the shift of the spectral lines of light propagating in a medium is investigated within Wolf’s framework. The condition for no blueshift is derived. It is shown that under the same hypothesis the property DvN11@dN is satisfied. Moreover, the no blueshift condition has been found to be closely related to the no blurring condition. These res...

We analyze residuals from the Tully-Fisher relation for the emission-line galaxies in the Nearby Field Galaxy Survey, a broadly representative survey designed to fairly sample the variety of galaxy morphologies and environments in the local universe for luminosities from MB 1⁄4 15 to 23. For a subsample consisting of the spiral galaxies brighter than M R 1⁄4 18, we find strong correlations betw...
